Book Review: A Good Girl's Guide to Murder

A GOOD GIRL’S GUIDE TO MURDER

by Holly Jackson

Review by Malachi Westbrook

AGGGTM is a YA Mystery Novel following high school student Pip while investigating the murder case of a former student from her high school. This is book one of a soon to be trilogy with currently two books released. I read this as a part of the Judge a Book Podcast book club. The case was closed five years ago, but Pip is not so sure. While uncovering more secrets to this case, everything may not be as it once seemed.

I chose this book because I have found myself enjoying the YA mystery genre more and more. It was also requested to be a read-a-long for the Judge a Book podcast due to it’s popularity. This is a debut novel by this author and done in a multi-media fashion which is unique and fun to read.

This book was done so well in my opinion. It was page turning and completely unpredictable. The book hooks you from the very start. While I had many theories that I discussed on the podcast, I never predicted the ending and doubt you will either. I am eager to continue to read this series and see where the author takes us along Pip’s journey in true crime!

My Likes:

-It is an easy and quick read!

-The ending is so unpredictable.

-Wonderful plot twists!

-The multi-media aspects that keep the reading interesting.

My Dislikes:

- I did not enjoy some of the choices that Pip made along the way.

Overall, I loved this book! I don’t know that I would reread it after doing such an in-depth read and discussion but would consider it to pick up any clues I may have missed. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries or shows like Criminal Minds. While it does deal with heavy topics it is not graphic and okay for teenagers. I landed at a four and a half-star rating because I found myself needing to know answers, not able to guess the ending, but did not always agree with Pip’s choices. Book two released on March 2nd, 2021!
